Project Description

The NSF Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program is a national effort to increase the number of students from underrepresented minority groups in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. In 2016, UA was awarded a $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to head the Alabama LSAMP program, which is an alliance of four-year institutions, community colleges, high schools, and industry partners. ALSAMP began as one of several similar alliance across the nation 25 years ago, and UA joined the alliance in 1994. The program awards performance-based stipends to incoming college students to hep cover some tuition, as well as offering a summer bridge program between high school and college and a spring research conference.

ISSR’s participation in ALSAMP includes the overall multi-site evaluation led by Sarah Dunlap and Anneliese Bolland and a research study of the impact of the summer bridge programs on student self-efficacy, sense of belonging to their major and institution, and adjustment to college. The research study is led by Joan Barth.
