Whole-person support for justice-involved Veterans
BRAVO-Vets works within Alabama’s Veterans Treatment Courts to help justice-involved Veterans move from screening to real connection — the right services, at the right time, with follow-up that continues until the connection holds.
About the program
No single part of a Veteran’s story can be understood in isolation
Brain injury, mental health, substance use, sleep, housing, employment, and family circumstances interact — and the path forward is easier to find when someone looks at the whole picture at once. BRAVO-Vets provides multi-domain screening, integrated summaries that help court teams see context clearly, warm handoffs to trusted providers and programs, and closed-loop follow-up that continues until a Veteran actually reaches support — not just receives a phone number.
BRAVO-Vets is a bridge, not a clinic. We do not diagnose or provide treatment. We help identify needs, organize information respectfully, and connect Veterans with clinical, VA, state, and community partners — and we stay engaged so nothing falls through the gap.
Our approach is strengths-based. The Veterans we serve carry records of service, leadership, and resilience alongside their challenges, and we treat services as a means of restoration.
How BRAVO-Vets works
From connection to coordinated referral
Connection
The court and/or the participant initiates contact.
Intake
Veteran context and legal context are gathered.
Assessment
Brain injury, behavioral health, and non-medical factors influencing health are assessed.
Findings review
Results are reviewed with the participant.
Prioritization and team alignment
Participant priorities are clarified and the team aligns on next steps.
Report and referral planning
The team drafts the summary, identifies referrals, and checks fit and availability.
Care coordination
BRAVO-Vets coordinates with the participant, the court, VA-connected partners as appropriate, and community providers.
Referral linkage
Referrals are scheduled and transportation is verified.

Who we serve
Veterans connected to Alabama’s Veterans Treatment Courts
BRAVO-Vets serves justice-involved Veterans across Alabama. Referrals typically come from Veterans Treatment Court teams — judges, coordinators, defense counsel, prosecutors, and Veterans Justice Outreach partners — and Veterans and family members are always welcome to reach out directly.
There is no cost to Veterans for BRAVO-Vets services.

BRAVO-Vets is a program of the Institute for Social Science Research at The University of Alabama, supported by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. We work alongside Veterans Treatment Courts, the State TBI Program, VA-connected partners, behavioral health and substance-use treatment providers, and housing, employment, and community organizations across the state.
